Different types of roaches

There are different types of species of roaches in the world. Some of the common species include German Cockroaches, American Cockroaches, Brown-Banded Cockroaches, and Oriental Cockroaches.

1. German Cockroaches

These cockroaches are one of the most common species and are 13-16 mm long. They are pale brown, with two dark-brown stripes behind the head.They live up to 12 months.

The German cockroach later was considered to have emerged from the region of Ethiopia in Northeast Africa, but more recent evidence suggests that it originated in Southeast Asia.

2. American Cockroaches

These are the largest cockroaches found in homes. These could be up to 53 mm in length. These are reddish-brown in color, with the presence of light yellow bands around the shield behind the head.

Both male and female species are capable to fly for short distances due to the presence of wings. These can survive up to 2 years. These are native to Africa and the Middle-East.

3. Brown Banded Cockroaches

These grow up to 13 mm. They have reddish-brown to dark-brown wings. They can fly as well. The species of brown banded cockroaches contain yellow bands across their bodies.

The average life is of 3 to 11 months. These are found in regions around the Crimean Peninsula and the black sea.

4. Oriental Cockroaches

These have glossy, dark-brown, or black bodies. Females grow up to 32 mm in length whereas males grow up to 25 mm. They can’t fly. Their life span is of 6 months. They feed on decaying organic matter.

What attracts Roaches?

Cockroaches are known to carry diseases that can lead to allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to get an insight into the reasons why cockroaches enter into your home.

These are extremely tough pests. Once their invasion takes place, it is very difficult to get rid of them. The thing which attracts them the most is food.  This could be any food item including human food, pet food, bird feed, and even cardboard.

Ensure the tight sealing of the food items to prevent their entrance. If you ever spot these cockroaches inside your home, it is advisable to throw out these food sources as soon as possible. 

Food is not the only factor that attracts them to your home. There are many other factors as well. Cockroaches can survive for 3 months without food

They are always in search of damp, dark, and wet places to hide. They take up occupancy in items such as boxes, shelves, and books to protect themselves from dangers. 

Keeping a clean home is important. Sweeping and mopping regularly is advised to keep these away. Be sure to seal the trash properly and regularly empty the trash box.

Always search for leaky pipes or pet water bowls that could feed these cockroaches and be sure to eliminate these at the earliest.
