Types of Pigeons

1. Domestic Pigeons

A lot of pigeons around the world are used for some domestic purposes like for sports, or to be used for some hobby or for the eating purpose.

When these pigeons are released in the wild, accidentally or deliberately, then they can’t feed themselves and survive on their own like other wild pigeons. This is the most common category of pigeons rescued and saved at Paloma.

2. King Pigeons

King Pigeons are usually bred for the food purposes. Their size is larger than both feral and homing pigeons and they are white in color with pink bills. Well intentioned people often buy these pigeons from the animal market to later release them.

Unfortunately, King Pigeons face a lot of difficulties in the wild because their flight and survival capabilities are not great. But they still are considered to be great pets. They are humble and leaned to human contact.

3. Racing and Homing Pigeons

Homing pigeons can be found in variety of colors but they are generally blue or white. These pigeons are mostly used for the racing competitions or ceremonies where they are used as doves or, normal pets for the humans.

They have a strong command in flying and they have athletic homing instincts they are trained to return to their homes after some event or ceremony. Homers and racers do, nevertheless, get lost or injured because of them being used in the bands.

4. Fancy Pigeons

Fancy Pigeons are the species that are kept by the people for their hobbies and their enthusiasm for the pigeons. Some hobbyists make their pigeons go to the pigeon show, just like the dog shows. Others keep fancy pigeons as pets. There are many types of fancy pigeons, like Tumblers, Pouters, and Owls.

5. Feral Pigeons

Most pigeons found in the cities and towns are the (feral) wild Rock Pigeons. These are the common pigeons in blue colors that live in houses and forage for food. In the countryside, they are frequently found to roost in sheds or around bridges.

Feral pigeons are well adjusted to cities, suburbs and rural regions. These pigeons should be left to live freely like wild pigeons.

6. Band-Tailed Pigeons

Band-tailed Pigeons are wild pigeons, usually seen in North America and the Pacific Coast. These pigeons have a gray banded tail with a white band and a pearlescent patch at the nape. They’re about 14 to 18 inches tall with a glossy yellow beak.

These pigeons are found at forest edges and in woodlands, and they spend much of their time in trees. They like to feed on the acorns the most, but they can also feed on berries, grains, plants and different available resources depending on the environment.

What do Pigeons Eat?

City-based pigeons have become scavengers, they stop feeding on their regular food and they feed themselves with whatever waste they can find. But generally they like fruit and seeds.

Pigeon Habitat

Pigeons prefer any surface or trees to live, this depends on their species. Where the similarity between all of the species is to make nests with delicate twigs so that they can lay their eggs on it.

These nests are built in the area where the pigeons want to live. And the species like rock dove, like to make their nests on high building or the rooftops, this is due to the lack of lush trees in city.

Except the extreme hot or cold regions, Pigeons can be found everywhere in this world. The most popular species of the pigeons is the rock dove, which can be found everywhere.

Problems caused by Pigeons

Pigeons aren’t the most neat and clean birds. They carry a host of parasites and infections through droppings, and dust. A lot of infections are spread by the pigeons like, Psittacosis, E.coli, Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcosis and more.

Apart from being airborne parasite carriers, pigeons leave a huge quantity of droppings. Their feces are highly-acidic, it tints the surfaces it is left on and can even increase the speed of deterioration of a structure. Pigeon’s feces is sturdy and once it dries out, it’s used to boost nest construction to make it last throughout winter.

Pigeons are also famous for shedding their feathers everywhere in the house. The mess made by these birds is difficult to clean as they can shed those feathers again. It may clog eaves, gutters and air vents.

Additional pests

After diseases, pigeons can also transfer a vermin such as, bed bugs, ticks, lice, and bird mites. The pests continue to live even if the bird leaves the nest.

Pigeons are also famous for disturbing the people in home by making annoying noise.

A disturbance to gardeners

The pigeon also ambushes crops, harm plants in search of food.

Advantages of Pigeons

  • Pigeons once served an important role during the both world wars for delivering the messages.
  •  Pigeons can be great competitors and can take part in various contests. During a pigeon race, competitors are released simultaneously from one region and the pigeon which makes it home to its own cage first wins.
  • Many people find them aesthetically satisfying. Photographer Andrew Garn, who clicked pictures of 5,000 pigeons in the period of four years. He said in New York magazine’s interview that he finds them “quite beautiful” up close.

Why shouldn’t you kill Pigeons?

Killing Pigeons isn’t the right option.

According to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, it’s illegal to disturb or kill the nesting site of any native bird. A huge exception to this is wild pigeons, since they don’t live in the United States.

As much as people are independent to kill pigeons according to federal law, some states act according to their local rules. Some see it as animal brutality while others allow poisoning, but not hitting.

Although you can kill pigeons, it’s not a good outcome to the situation. Because then more birds can gather and invade the house.

Also, killing of these birds would mean that there will be a new trouble of now disposing dead bodies of the pigeons. If a person fails to dispose the dead body, then it will rot and make it worse. It can lure other pests like rodents and different predator birds to the home.

Hitting and poisoning pigeons are not the correct ways to get away from pigeons. A person needs to prevent these birds from entering the house.

Now, after reading the article people might understand that killing is not really an option when it comes to pigeons, but you can get away from them by various methods and products available on amazon.

Pigeons can cause a lot of damage to the home or and can spoil a lot of spots at house, so it’s better to get rid of them in a humane way.
